Darfur for Dummies

VideosPosted by San Thursday, December 18 2008 17:09:25

For those of us who always wondered what the fuss Darfur crisis is all about, but never had the time to dig deeper than reading newspaper headlines, here's a 10 min. clips that explains pretty well what causes the conflict and what drives it to become such a mess... I've always thought we have a pretty severe case of political unrest in Thailand, but at least, it takes place relatively peacefully and the majority of people try their best to avoid stirring up unnessesary violence. Dafur is on the other hand, a completely different ballpark. With their inablity to govern their own people, perhaps it's best to put African countries back under colonialism, or???

Either way, big kudos to Pete McCormack for this very well made clips.

While walking along a beach, an elderly gentleman saw someone in the distance leaning down, picking something up and throwing it into the ocean.
As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, picking up starfish one by one and tossing each one gently back into the water.

He came closer still and called out, “Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?”
The young man paused, looked up, and replied “Throwing starfish into the ocean.”
The old man smiled, and said, “I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?”
To this, the young man replied, “The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them in, they’ll die.”

Upon hearing this, the elderly observer commented, “But, young man, do you not realise that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can’t possibly make a difference!”
The young man listened politely. Then he bent down, picked up another starfish, threw it into the back into the ocean past the breaking waves and said, “It made a difference for that one.”

From R. Crutch:

Whenever I get a package of plain M&Ms, I make it my duty to continue the strength and robustness of the candy as a species. To this end, I hold M&M duels.

Taking two candies between my thumb and forefinger, I apply pressure, squeezing them together until one of them breaks and splinters. That is the "loser," and I eat the inferior one immediately. The winner gets to go another round.

I have found that, in general, the brown and red M&Ms are tougher, and the newer blue ones are genetically inferior. I have hypothesized that the blue M&Ms as a race cannot survive long in the intense theater of competition that is the modern candy and snack-food world.

Occasionally I will get a mutation, a candy that is misshapen, or pointier, or flatter than the rest. Almost invariably this proves to be a weakness, but on very rare occasions it gives the candy extra strength. In this way, the species continues to adapt to its environment.

When I reach the end of the pack, I am left with one M&M, the strongest of the herd. Since it would make no sense to eat this one as well, I pack it neatly in an envelope and send it to M&M Mars, A Division of Mars, Inc., Hackettstown, NJ 17840-1503 U.S.A., along with a 3x5 card reading, "Please use this M&M for breeding purposes."

This week they wrote back to thank me, and sent me a coupon for a free 1/2 pound bag of plain M&Ms. I consider this "grant money." I have set aside the weekend for a grand tournament. From a field of hundreds, we will discover the True Champion.

There can be only one.

What if the US economy is about to collapse? There's a VERY big chance that this might happen within less than a year from now as the whole country is being financed by DEBT that has accumulated during the years. Eventually, the balloon will go bust just like what has happened in Iceland. When this happens it sure will affect all of us non-US citizen as well.

Here's a few rules to minimise the impact of the global financial crisis:

1. Live a balanced life and avoid overspending.

2. Don't buy things we don't need.

3. Don't buy Branded good's.

4. Don't buy excess Food, Cloths, Cosmetics, Footwear, electronics and
Fashion accessories just think before you buy.

Tip: World still has a lot of growth ahead and the future holds immense opportunities for us. Let us make the most of it and save and invest it wisely instead of wasting our precious little on things we don't need.

5. Don't stress out your self, after work try to do some extra activities like swimming, yoga, walking, running where you can divert your mind from stress.
A thumb rule: Health is more important than money.

6. Try to understand each other in financial matters and help each other.

Tip: As soon as you get your monthly salary, set aside a fixed amount, usually 35 per cent, for insurance, savings and investments. You can then spend the rest.

7. Not all loans are bad. Loans that are 'need based' (home loans, education loans) can always find a place in your finances against those that are largely 'want based' (Credit cards, personal loans, car loans).

8. Borrow only if repayment is financially comfortable.

In that respect, there is one American who I really respect – WARREN BUFFET. He has lived in the same ordinary house for over three decades, drives his own medium sized car and leads an extremely regular 'middle class' life. If that's all it takes for the richest person on earth to be happy, why do all of us need to take extra stress just so that we can get things which aren't even essential?

My comment at Current News

VideosPosted by San Wednesday, October 29 2008 22:15:55
My comment made it to Current:News. A bit goofy but hey, who couldn't need a laugh during this economic downturn era, right ;-)

about current.com

Current is about what's going on in your world: all the things you and your friends are actually interested in -- that you won't find on any other news site or cable TV channel.

Current.com is the place to find and share stories and videos that are interesting to you. It connects to Current TV, a global cable and satellite TV network.

To those of you who're a bit of a travel/documentary buff, there's a section called "Vanguard journalism" @ http://current.com/topics/501_vanguard_journalism

These "Vanguard journalists" travel across the odd parts of the world that most people will never get to see. I always get butterflies in my stomach watching these series, so I suggest you guys give it a go. What a fantastic journalism and you don't need a cable TV (or just a TV for that matter) to watch it.

The speech that made me decide to get a Mac

VideosPosted by San Friday, October 17 2008 20:00:48

Sometimes, a speech from the CEO of a consumer electronics company works much better than regular ads you see on television. I've always been a "PC guy" my entire life, but then a bit over a year ago, I came across Steve Jobs' 2005 Stanford commencement speech. It made such a profound impact on my life that I decided to get myself a Mac as a way to express my gratitude towards his inspiring words. I was in the market for a new laptop at the time anyway so I might as well support his company, right?

Now after more than 6 months as a "Mac guy" all I can tell is: Once you go Mac, you'll never go back :-) Hope you enjoy viewing this video as much as I did.
